As we head into the tail end of the winter, it should be no secret that we are enjoying the best conditions of the season right now. It is hard to believe that most of the winter is already behind us, which is even more reason to make a trip to Burke this month and enjoy the great snow conditions and weather. It has been a very busy season so far with a lot of ups and downs, coupled with news and excitement about the future of Burke Mountain. I will save my year in review post until after we close in mid April, but would like to take the opportunity now to introduce two new faces you have probably read about in local press and Burke media, seen around the mountain, and hopefully have had a chance to meet.

It’s an exciting time at Burke Mountain. With new owners, QBurke Mountain Resorts, come new plans–big plans–for the mountain’s future. And as with any undertaking this big, people have questions. We hear them at the base lodge, on the lifts, at the country store, the gas station–pretty much everywhere. So we’re using this blog post to answer those questions, in order:

Hurricane Sandy has come and gone and we were fortunate to get thru this weather event with no significant damages.  We hope all of our customers to the south were equally as lucky.  It’s been a very busy October and we are looking forward to the start of ski season- but before we talk about the winter plans ahead- I want to take a quick look back on a great month of October.

It’s the middle of September and the incredible summer weather continues. We have transitioned from one of the worst winters in several decades to one of the best summers in the same time period, so its only fitting that we are in store for a terrific winter. Although we still see a few seventy and eighty degree days, the nights have started to get colder with a few mornings in the mid 30’s. With those temperatures, it won’t be long before we are able to test out our new snowmaking system! We have received our first shipment of 90 snowguns with an additional 50 still on the way. We are all very excited to push for a November 23rd opening date, and hope the weather continues to cooperate so that we can make that a reality. We want to remind all of our customers interested in a season pass (which is the most cost effective way to ski and ride at Burke, and Jay with The Judge Pass) to make sure you put your order in before the October 15th pass deadline, after which our prices will increase.

Update from the GM

Memorial Day weekend is behind us and the official start to summer is not far off, and with the change of seasons comes more exciting changes at Burke. Last year at this time we were getting ready to talk about the new Mid Burke lift and the installation of the wind turbine. One would think it would be difficult to top those announcements, but the news last week may just have done that. For those who have not heard, Burke was purchased by a private ownership group last week. The new owners, headed by businessman Ariel Quiros, own a number of other entities (both ski and non ski related) including Jay Peak Resort. Jay Peak has seen unprecedented capital investment in the resort over the past several years led by their President and co-owner Bill Stenger. We are delighted to have such a vibrant ownership team that is locally based and has such extensive experience in the ski resort industry.

So what do these changes mean for Burke? First, there are still many details to work out, this transaction happened very quickly, both the existing Burke team and new owners need to get up to speed. There will likely be no immediate changes in the next few months, summer festivals, lift served mountain biking, and the Tamarack grill will continue to operate as planned. Burke will continue to have its own brand and identity, and likewise for Jay Peak. Improvements for the upcoming winter, including significant upgrades to the snowmaking system and additional marketing are now being discussed. Beyond this season, further improvements and attractions, including additional bed base are seen as important to the success of Burke. We will also be discussing reciprocal pass and ticket deals that will allow the customers of both resorts to take advantage of this new partnership.
