2013 is off to an interesting start. The first week was arguably some of the best skiing we have had at Burke in over two years followed by an obligatory "January thaw" with spring-like snow conditions and a few nostalgic rides on the Willoughby chair-lift. Some wildly windy weather during the third weekend has brought us to where we are now, into a deep freeze. With this midweek cold spell, we will again put the new snowmaking system to work and look to build snow pack on the upper mountain and trails that do not typically see snowmaking, such as the Gap. Our lift maintenance team works hard to keep all our lifts running so that our customers can enjoy as much time on the mountain as possible. We were thankful for this earlier in the month when the power line serving the Mid Burke Express went down. The Willoughby was brought on line quickly so that everyone could still enjoy top to bottom skiing, albeit a slower ride to the top. Our Willoughby chair feels like it is hardly moving compared to the new detachable, but it is nice to have in situations like this.
The weekend weather is forecast is calling for a bit of a warm up which will make for great conditions for Pass Holder Appreciation Weekend (there are even hints of possible snow before the weekend). There are a number of activities and events this weekend, including snowboard demos, our first annual Randonee Rally, the Dashney Mile Style, the first annual Wine & Art Snowcase, après ski parties and more. We hope all pass holders will join us this weekend to share the Burke experience with friends and family with ½ price lift tickets both Saturday and Sunday (see our events page for full details). We plan on giving a quick update to our development plans for the next few years at 5:00pm Saturday afternoon at the Mid Burke Lodge during the Season Pass Holder Apres Ski Party. You will also see more information about this in the next week or so on our website and I will discuss this at length in the next blog so look for this information down the road.
Although Roger’s football season ended a couple of weekends ago and ours ended this past weekend, the ski season is just getting started – we hope to see you out there!
